Thermometer of love. Fun children's experiment for Valentine's Day

What would life be like without love? Much more boring, that's for sure! In Guianfantil.com We propose a fun children's science experiment that you can do on Valentine's Day. We refer to the love thermometer ... yes, yes, you read that correctly, the thermometer of love!

It is a simple craft to prepare that will help you 'measure' how much love you have in your family. The result will be very surprising! Have you ever planned a scientific Valentine?

Materials:

  • A small plastic bottle
  • A clear straw
  • Clay
  • 96º sanitary alcohol
  • Red food coloring

Love is defined as a pleasant and very intense feeling towards someone or something, a pink emotion that produces a special shine in our eyes, and even as a universal concept, which despite being difficult to define due to its complexity , put a big smile on our face accompanied by a feeling of fullness within us.

There are many types of love according to psychology, but we want to focus on the love between the components of a family: for parents, for children, for grandparents ... Our creative science class begins for Valentine's Day!

1. To make the love thermometer, one of you has to take the bottle and open the cap to fill it with some sanitary alcohol; a couple of fingers will suffice.

2. Then you just have to add a drop of red food coloring, just one! Shake the bottle a bit so that the colorant is completely diluted in the alcohol, so you will get your scientific love liquid (C2H6O LOVE).

3. To do this experiment it is necessary to use a bottle that has a hole in the cap. We have used a transparent plastic travel bottle. It is that type of bottle that you can fill with soap and whose cap already comes with a hole made, but you can recycle a small bottle of water and make a hole in the plug with the help of an awl and scissors. If this is your case, this step must be carried out by an adult, or at least supervised to avoid accidents.

4. The next step is very important! Next, you have to insert the straw through the hole in the cap, but this must be very well sealed, so it is necessary that use the plasticine.

Before screwing the cap with the straw already inserted through the hole, stick a little plasticine inside and outside, this way the straw will not move and we will avoid air leaks for the experiment to work properly.

If the hole in the stopper is smaller than the straw, you can enlarge it with the help of scissors, for this, an adult must insert one of the scissors blades through the hole and make a few turns. And if you don't have clear straws, you can recycle a dispenser, but they are easy to find.

5. The great moment has arrived! Close the bottle tightly and observe, because you have before you the thermometer of love! How easy was it to manufacture? If you feel like it, you can decorate it as you like. Marker drawings, stickers ... We have made hearts to celebrate that Valentine's Day is the day of love. It will be romantically beautiful!

To start the experiment, it is only necessary to hold the thermometer by the base, so rub your hands well because the game begins! The instructions are simple:

- To find out who has the most amount of love in blood, each of the components of the family you will need to hold the thermometer in your hands.

- Surprisingly, the scientific liquid of love will start to rise through the straw!

- The one who manages to climb higher will win the medal for the most loving component of the family.

But, attention moms and dads! You can also use it to know if your children are in love. In this case, with hardly any explanations, you will have to ask them the question: are you in love or in love? There is a good chance that they will deny it, so you will have to ask them to hold the love thermometer in their hands.

If the liquid starts to rise, it will mean that you are in love / in love, but what really It will give them away the red color of their cheeks, an expression of shame and disbelief or a few laughs.

Ok ... We admit it, although love is the engine that moves the world, something more than love intervenes in the movement of the liquid in this thermometer: science! But how does it work?

On a scientific level, what happens is the following:

Alcohol is a very volatile liquid. By holding the bottle by the base, between our hands, we transmit heat and get part of the liquid to evaporate. This vapor collects at the top of the bottle (which is why it is so important to seal the hole in the cap well to prevent leaks!) And the vapor builds its pressure, pushing the liquid at the bottom up through the straw. What is fascinating?

Although science may seem difficult, as you can see it is a simple activity that will also promote the development of very positive aspects in children:

  • Organization and teamwork.
  • Curiosity for the unknown.
  • Enthusiasm and individual participation.
  • The rigor in the work performed.
  • Reflection and drawing conclusions after finishing the experiment.

There are many studies that show the influence of emotions on health. Knowing how to recognize them will help your children manage everything they feel and experience throughout your life in a very beneficial way, but what exactly is an emotion?

Emotions are reactions of our body to a sensation or feeling that is usually generated immediately after having a thought, and we experience them daily, sometimes even unconsciously, without realizing it! It seems that the key to our emotional well-being it resides in the quality of what we think, but inevitably our thoughts can be influenced by external circumstances that are generated in our environment.

Luckily for us, learning the proper concept of the word love can help us create more positive and less painful situations and experiences for everyone because we become more conscious human beings. And, in the case of children, there is no better way to learn that through play or fun activities like this experiment ... perfect for Valentine's Day!

Without a doubt, love is made up of very important values, such as lto acceptance, respect and trust, among others. Teaching children to build relationships from love and freedom, instead of relating from fear or need, will help them grow and avoid the dreaded toxic relationships, which can not only occur between couples, but also in the field of friendship.

But how can we convey this information to a child, if even for adults it is sometimes difficult to understand? Here are some tips:

- Teach love through example
Everything begins with oneself, that is, with us parents. We must teach children by example what love is. And the best way to achieve this is ... loving them very much!

To do this, we must start by avoiding projecting our expectations on them. Every child is different, neither better nor worse, even your child may be totally different from you, but that is not a negative thing, quite the opposite.

- Reinforce personal acceptance of children
It is necessary to teach our children to accept and respect each other as they are, with their strengths, which are surely many, but also with their limits.

If we help them to recognize their limits in a correct and positive way, they can work to improve them from motivation and joy, and not from frustration or feelings of anger or inferiority. And to work the limits in a positive way, you have to forget the comparisons and the exacerbated competitiveness.

- Explain what respect is
Respect for the environment and the people around them, knowing how to differentiate what is right from what is wrong, what they like and what they don't ... All this will help them to forge their personality and show themselves to the world as people with their own tastes and experiences.

- Kisses, hugs, caresses ...
To teach children what love is, the best thing is to fill our lives with this emotion, with many kisses, hugs, beautiful messages, signs of affection ... Your love thermometer will not stop rising.

Happy Valentines Day!
